Nagaland Governor, La Ganesan, inaugurated the 25th All India Police Band Competition at Drill Ground, ARTC & S. Shokhuvi, Dimapur, on 18th November 2024. 27 Police Bands from across the nation, donning their uniform and displaying the colours of their states & territories, will participate in the week-long celebration of musical excellence and unity among India’s police band. The event is being organised by Assam Rifles Training Centre & School (ARTC&S).
Speaking on the occasion, Governor La Ganesan stated that this gathering celebrates not only the musical prowess of the country’s Police Bands but also the spirit of unity, discipline, and dedication that our armed Police Forces exhibit. Military and Police bands have been a cornerstone of military tradition for centuries, serving multiple roles that extend beyond music, he stated, underlining the crucial part they play in military structure, communication, morale, and national identity. From ancient times to the modern era, military bands have evolved, adapting to the needs of the times while retaining its significance in military culture, he added.
Ganesan pointed out that prior to modern science and technology, music was an essential tool of communication to convey orders and signals across vast and often chaotic battlefields. Instruments like drums, bugles, and trumpets were used to command the troops, coordinate, manoeuvre, and provide rhythm during marches. In particular, buglers would play specific calls, such as the “assembly” or “retreat”, which would alert soldiers to regroup, charge, or retreat, ensuring coordinated movements during the battle, the Governor said.
He mentioned that the 25th All India Police Band Competition should not just be a showcase of musical talent but should also stand as a testament to the hard work and commitment of our Police personnel. This event is an opportunity to celebrate and to recognize the importance of music in enhancing the morale and spirit within our Police Forces, he said.
He urged all the participants to embrace the spirit of competition with enthusiasm and sportsmanship. While winning is undoubtedly a goal, the true essence of this event lies in forging bonds of friendships. Each band brings with it a unique story, and encourages them to share those stories through their music. He expressed his best wishes to all the teams participating in the competition and their performances be filled with passion and creativity and inspire all who hear it. Let this event be a reminder of the strength of our nation’s spirit, the dedication of our Police Forces and the unifying power of music, the Governor said.
In conclusion, he extended his best wishes to the host, Assam Rifles, one of the oldest and most respected paramilitary forces in India, with a distinguished history dating back to 1835, known for its high degree of professionalism, operational efficiency and preparedness and wishes the organizers, Jury members and participants and hope that the occasion will pave the way for a stronger bond and camaraderie between the Police Forces of our nation.
The highlights of the program included March Past by the participating teams. Welcome address and presentation of memento to Governor, La Ganesan by Additional Director General, Assam Rifles, followed by unfurl of All India Police Sports Control Board Flag. Vote of thanks was proposed by Commandant, Assam Rifles Training Centre & School. Cultural presentation by North East Centric.
