A fierce gunbattle broke out this morning between the army and militants in a forest in Barpathar in Tinsukia district of Assam.
According to well-informed sources, the army was on patrol in the Pengeri-Digboi road when they were fired upon near Bapathar at 9:20am by unidentified militants.
The sources suspect the militants to be from ULFA-I group.
As per reports, the Pengeri-Digboi Road has been closed for the general public and additional forces, including the state police, have been deployed in the area.
The army operation is still underway.
No casualties have been reported so far. Further details are awaited.
