The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued
weather updates for the next four days from September 30 to October 3, predicting heavy rains accompanied by localised thunderstorm and lightning across several districts.
In a release on Monday, the NSDMA informed that while most places across the state would witness localized thunderstorm and lightning with moderate rain till October 3, the districts of Kohima, Kiphire, Chumoukedima, Dimapur, Niuland and Tuensang will witness heavy rain accompanied by localized thunderstorm and lightning on September 30.
As a result, the authorities put up an alert to take necessary measures during this period, including avoiding lightning strikes and high winds, which can disrupt communication and connectivity. Due to the risk of high precipitation in the hill sector, it warned that the state’s lowland and foothill districts, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli are vulnerable to inundated waterlogging and flash floods.

Towards this, the NSDMA requested the low-lying districts to implement the

Meanwhile, the hilly districts have been requested to implement the following precautionary measures in light of any landslide situation: to be alert during heavy rainfall and continuous damp weather; stay out of the path of a landslide or debris flow; listen for any unusual sound that might indicate moving debris, trees cracking or rolling boulders (large stones); be alert when there is a sudden increase in volume of water in streams and a marked transformation from clear to muddy water.
Urging the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period, the NSDMA further requested all the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) and other line departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during the monsoon season.
