In what can be undoubtedly called the ‘worst of time’, Kiphire has witness one of the most severe damages in past years due to heavy rainfall.
A resident of GHS ward, Kiphire informed that around 11:30 PM on Wednesday, he noticed some damages to his house amid the heavy rain. Sensing danger, he immediately shifted his children to their neighbour’s house and soon after his fears came true when he saw their house, consisting of one living room and four bedrooms being taken by landslide. Only their kitchen is still standing but with cracks in several places.
The ward officials have visited the site and are said to have referred the matter to the administration.

This house is one of the many houses that have been reportedly destroyed due to the incessant rainfall in the region.
The chairman of the Jail Ward informed that two houses have been destroyed in their ward due to heavy rainfall Wednesday night, while Medical Ward residents also witnessed destruction of three houses in their area. Property damages were also reported in Kipongya, Forest, and Longya wards in Kiphire.
Many wards have also reported landslide in the road areas and drainages.
In a major setback, the lifeline road leading to Pungro area was also damaged critically with landslide shutting the highway at an instant.
Langkok village which is approximately 15 Km from the district headquarters have also reported heavy landslides on its highway.
A road leading to Kiphire Cemetery is also cut off by landslide, while mission compound drainage was reportedly flooded due to the rain.
Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) have visited the families of the unfortunate incidents and assured necessary arrangements, an official informed.
While it is uncertain exactly how many properties have been affected, according to sources altogether the total damages to property in the tragedy is worth crores.
Altogether there are 11 wards under Kiphire town.
Kiphire DDMA and District Administration are visiting the affected sites and taking measures in the situation.
