Continuous rainfall over the past several days has triggered a flash flood in Chanka village under Wokha district, causing extensive damage to agricultural land and severely impacting the livelihoods of villagers.
According to reports from villagers, floodwaters have submerged a significant portion of jhum (shifting cultivation) fields, disrupting agricultural activities at a critical stage of the cultivation season. Approximately 20 farmers have been directly affected by the disaster.
Standing crops, including paddy, maize, ginger, chili, pumpkin, ash gourd, and various vegetables, have either been destroyed or washed away. Field huts and temporary farm shelters have also sustained considerable damage, compounding the hardship faced by the farming community. The water level remains high, and most of us are unable to even reach our fields to assess the full extent of the damage.
Farming being the primary source of livelihood in Chanka village, the timing of the flood has dealt a heavy blow to the community.
