The Ralan Area Lotha Hoho has written to the Chief Warden, Wild Life Conservation Nagaland, Dimapur, reporting on the presence of wild elephants at Ralan area which has damaged properties and crops.

In the letter issued on October 4, the RALH informed that a herd of wild elephant numbering about 40(forty) has been causing havoc in the area for the past about one week, damaging various plantation/paddy crops and properties.

“The situation has immensely affected the daily course of the villagers as it has badly restricted their movement. It is also pertinent to mention that, presence of wild elephant in the area has been witnessed every year but so far no preventive measures were seen to have been implemented from the concern department,” stated the RALH.

Highlighting the plight of the villagers, the Hoho mentioned that they have been patient enough to bear the losses caused by the wild elephants. “However, if the said situation persists or unless the concerned authorities take up some measures at the earliest, the villagers may be tempted to take up their own course of action to control the situation as harvesting of paddies is also approaching soon,” stated the Hoho.

It has, therefore, requested the Department to take up the matter on urgent and priority basis to minimize the men-elephant conflict in the area at the earliest as it had already caused irreplaceable loss to the villagers over the years besides endangering the lives of the public.
