Hornbill Esports Championship Season 2 begins

The two-day Hornbill Esports Championship Season 2, a flagship event of the Hornbill Festival 2025 organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Government of Nagaland, in collaboration with the Esports Association of Nagaland (ESAN), began on December 8 at IG Stadium, Kohima, bringing together leading Esports athletes and teams from across India.

Special guest Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, stated that this event deserves appreciation because Esports has become widespread. “Whether one likes it or not, it is a modern form of competition, a growing trend, and a billion-dollar industry played by people of all ages across continents,” he said.

He emphasized that this sport cannot be undervalued and informed that the Government of Nagaland has taken up this initiative recognising its importance, ensuring that the youth do not miss out on opportunities in this multi-million-dollar sector.

He further said that the youths of Nagaland are talented in this field, and the government understands this.

Medha assured that Esports would continue to grow both in Nagaland and in India. He also noted that Nagaland offers some of the highest prize money in the country.

He stated that many young people are now earning through Esports and highlighted the significant role Esports plays in preparing them for physical sports. He welcomed all players, acknowledging that although Nagaland may not have the best infrastructure or connectivity, its people are eager and happy to host them.

He apologized on behalf of the government for any shortcomings and urged participants to share their grievances, assuring them that these will be addressed. He further stated that the Hornbill Festival is not only about celebration but also about building connections and forming new friendships.

Online qualifiers held from October 16 to November 9, saw outstanding participation, with 512 teams and 240 individual competitors—marking one of the largest esports registrations in the state to date.

For the first time, the event would be followed by the Esports Music Festival 2025. Scheduled after the esports closing ceremony on December 9, 2025, the festival aims to combine digital entertainment with modern music culture, offering a memorable experience for youth and fans.

Performing artists include Polar Lights (Nagaland); Abdon Mech (Nagaland); Guru Gee (Mizoram); and  Zephyrtone (Pune).

Director DYRS Kethosituo Sekhose delivered the welcome address, and Vikhoto Zao, Associate Pastor of PCRC Kohima, offered the invocation earlier.
