Train no 12810 from Howrah to Mumbai Mail has derailed near Barabamboo station of Chakradharpur Division in Jharkhand at around 3.30 am on Tuesday. Two persons have reportedly died in the incident involving 18 coaches of the train. 20 persons are said to be injured.
The South Eastern Railway has informed that special bus services have been arranged for transportation of passengers from the derailment spot and that stranded passengers were carried to Chakradharpur station by a Relief Train. It said that injured passengers were immediately shifted to Chakradharpur Railway Hospital and Community Health Centre, Khutpani.
Further, the SE Railway informed that Ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each has already been paid to four injured passengers and the Grant of Ex-gratia for the rest injured passengers is under process.
Due to the derailment of Howrah to Mumbai Mail, the Indian Railways has cancelled seven trains, short-terminated four and diverted seventeen trains in total, the South Eastern Railway stated.
“This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of Government of India?!” remarked West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on X while offering to the families of the bereaved families.
The Congress party highlighted that 21 people have been killed and over 100 have been injured in rail accidents in June and July 2024. “The poor railway system has led to a death toll in the country but no one is being held accountable,” it said while criticising Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
