The State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro on Friday inspected the disability compliance and public vehicles here at the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Kohima.
Speaking to a section of media after the inspection, Nakhro said that she was not satisfied because nothing has been done as per the accessibility norms. The accessibility standards have not been followed so we are not happy, she added.
“So, just the fact that I cannot even get into the building, there is no ramp where I can get inside the building, I have not been inside the building also, it obviously shows that none of the accessibility norms have been followed, ” the State Commissioner for PwDs stated, also adding, “it is good that they (the officials from transport department) were here today, we were able to check out some of the facilities that were still missing, and they have also promised to assure that they will work together with us to make sure that all thus things are done on priority.”

Nakhro said transport also comes under Accessible Indian Campaign (AIC) which is about the physical built environment, the building, public spaces and some of the major components of AIC are transport, information and communication. Towards this, she pointed out that after the enforcement of the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities in 2017, a time frame of five years was given for all these aspects to become accessible which expired in June 2022 however, she said Nagaland still has a very long way to go.
“We are serious about this, and we are going to make sure that all these things are implemented properly,” said Nakhro.
Further, Nakhro said a report will be given to the State government with a time frame with regard to transport which was inspected today to ensure that they start the work at the certain time.
“So, a time frame has to be there where the work is started, where various things are done, and implementation is started. So definitely we will be doing that,” added Nakhro.
Meanwhile, Nakhro also appreciated that the Transport Commissioner Elias T Lotha, officials from the Nagaland State Transport and others who were present during the inspection.
