In tune with Country music artist Yemkong Somba Chang

24 years old Yemkong Somba Chang, hailing down from Tuensang District, is a country music artist. Currently, pursuing Post Graduate studies at St. Josephs University Chümoukedima, Chang has dedicated to developing his career as country singer

 

In an interview with Nagaland Tribune, Somba shared that he embarked on his musical journey at the age of 16 as a guitarist in a rock band, performing at various concerts and contests where they covered a diverse repertoire ranging from classic rock and roll to punk, metal and Christian rock songs. “Over time, I evolved as a country singer, songwriter and a composer,” says Chang.

Coming from a family deeply passionate about music, his father, a primary mentor introduced him to his first guitar and exposed him to influential artists such as Dire Straits, CCR, Def Leppard, Don Williams and other bands which significantly shaped his musical sensibilities.  Under the guidance of his father, Chang began creating his own music at Clef Ensemble Production House, one of Nagaland esteemed recording house located in Kohima. He acknowledges his father who has been instrumental in pushing him towards recording the songs.

It was through his family’s prayers and continuous guidance that he found the courage to step out of his comfort zone and fully embrace his identity as a musician.

Till date, Somba has released several cover songs and three originals on his You Tube channel:  Found Love, released in 2021, A Young Country Boy – released in 2022 and third song – Holdin On, released in 2023

At present, he is engaged in producing his debut album, which features a collection of country songs set to be released soon. Chang attributes Producer, Alfred who owns Clef Ensemble Studio in Kohima,  who has been a pivotal part of his creative journey

‘’This album marks a significant milestone for me, comprising approximately 6 to 7 tracks. Over the years, I have actively managed my social media presence, primarily on instagram and You Tube, to promote my music effectively. The release of my first song, ‘Found Love’ garnered significant attention leading to numerous live shows and performance opportunities. Subsequent songs have further contributed to establishing the name in the music scene,” says Chang.

As a musician,  Chang notes that he draws inspiration from everyday scenes, introspection or putting himself in another person’s shoes. “Interacting with diverse individuals and observing their lifestyles also sparks creativity,” says Chang.

On his achievements, Chang shared that he has been a nominated at the 13th and 15th Nagaland music awards. Furthermore, he was also featured on Hills FM Nagaland radio and other media.

‘’Creating music has been the greatest joy of my life, something that resonates deeply within me. It’s not just a passion, it’s a calling that I wholeheartedly embrace, I am certain that I will continue to pour my heart and soul into music for the next five to ten years and beyond,” says Chang.

He encouraged younger musicians to strive to become true artists and never dwell on excuses for why opportunities seem out of reach. “Instead, create your own path and keep playing, keep learning and persist relentlessly with passion. Hard work is always rewarded. It’s a steadfast principle, so stay dedicated, push forward and strive for the top. Always keep God at the forefront in your journey,” advised Chang.
