Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) organised the second edition of inter-city competition Indian Swachhata League 2.0 (ISL 2.0) today at old NST under the theme “Join the Fight for Garbage Free India” with Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso MLA, 9 Kohima Town A/C as the Special Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Rhutso urged the concern citizens to not just participate for two weeks but to make cleanliness a lifestyle. He also urged the students to continue the practice of cleaning on every last day of the week by picking and putting the thrash in the right place and suggested that concerned citizens to also get involved in the campaign by providing water or juice to the students.
Pointing out that the population in Kohima town is about 2 lakhs with around 25,000 government employees, he urged the citizens to think of what they can do for the government and not just “what I will get from the government”. The MLA appealed the citizens to bring in creative ideas and innovatively contribute for the maintenance and development of the city and said “decide yourself that you can be a giver and not a taker”.
“I will also give my best to keep our city clean,” he assured.

Dr Rhutso said that the Indian Swachhata league 2.0 is a two-week program where youths and volunteers will participate various creative and unique initiatives to keep the city clean. ISL 2.0 is under the Swacch Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, a country-wide campaign initiated by the Government of India on 2nd October 2014 to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management and to create Open Defecation Free (ODF) villages.
Students from Government High School Chandmari, Kohima Orphanage & Destitute Home and Youth of Jakhama Baptist Fellowship, Kohima participated in the event on Saturday.
Earlier, the welcome note was delivered by Ruokuokhrienuo and vote of thanks was proposed by T Lanusenla Longkumer, Administrator, KMC following the taking of the Swacchata pledge.
Indian Swachhata League 2.0 is India’s first youth led inter-city competition towards building Garbage Free Cities. It is one of the activities under the annual Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) campaign which is under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and Grameen.
The SHS-2023 was jointly launched by Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri and Minister of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj Giriraj Singh on Friday in New Delhi. The fortnight campaign will culminate on Swachh Bharat Diwas, 2nd October 2023.
In this year’s ISL 2.0 over 4,000 city teams are ready to win the battle against garbage on the 17th of September through youth-led citizen teams. The best teams of this youth-led competition will be chosen by an independent process involving jury members of national repute on the basis of scale of participation, uniqueness of the activity, and impact of cleanliness initiatives.
