International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed at Litta Old village

Zunheboto: Program was followed by a comprehensive health camp through medical team under Zunheboto district

A unique intervention methodology aimed at raising awareness on substance abuse, HIV and a comprehensive health camp was conducted in commemoration of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26 June 2023 at Litta Old, VK Circle under Zunheboto. It was organised as part of the global annual event under the theme “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention”.

It may be noted here that the area has reported a high number of drug users in the past but more in the recent days.

The program was organised by Access to Rights and Knowledge (ARK) Foundation, with support from Nagaland State AIDS Control Society/ Nagaland Health Mission (NSACS/NHM) and Social Welfare Department as event partners, and also through the collaboration of the Village Council. The program was attended by village leaders, elders, Gaon buras, church representatives, community members and a host of village leaders from the neighbouring village surrounding Litta Old.

The program was held at Litta Old Baptist Church and was graced by Dr Ahu Sekhose, Project Director, NSACS. Significance of the event was delivered by Metevinuo Sakhrie, JD-IEC, NSACS; Harmful effects of Drug use – physical, occupational and legal harms by Ketho Angami, ARK Foundation; Success story through OST by a recovering drug user, Inashe Chishi; Service package under the purview of HIV Prevention Approaches by Dr. Bernice D Thapru, JD-Prevention Div, NSACS. The program also saw Hokishe Asumi, Hd. GB of Litta old, and Dr Ahu Sekhose, Project Director, NSACS.

The program was followed by a comprehensive health camp through medical team under Zunheboto district where 68 community members availed the medical services such as free general check-ups and blood test, and medicines as required was provided by the team.
