The Kohima District Administration, SINKALP District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Kohima, Social Welfare Department, in collaboration with Bright Morning Star Children Home (BMSCH), marked International Girl Child Day at the BMS Multipurpose Hall on October 10. The event celebrated the theme: “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis.”
Kesoneinuo, Gender Specialist, DHEW, Kohima, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of empowering girls and promoting gender equality. She highlighted that International Girl Child Day, launched by the United Nations, seeks to raise awareness on girls’ rights, education, and well-being globally.
“Girls have equal rights to education, healthcare, and opportunities,” Kesoneinuo said. “Each girl is born with dreams, and it is important to believe in oneself, work hard, and pursue goals fearlessly. Change does not wait for others; we create it.”
Citing the life of Helen Keller as an inspiring example, Kesoneinuo noted that despite being blind and deaf from a young age, Keller overcame immense challenges, graduated from college, authored 14 books, and delivered over 475 speeches, demonstrating that determination and perseverance can achieve great success.

Emphasizing the active role girls play in society, the speaker encouraged young girls to lead, support others, and create change in their communities. Programs organized by the team under the guidance of the District Administration and Department of Social Welfare include awareness campaigns, skills training, sports, and health initiatives, all aimed at fostering a nurturing environment for girls to thrive.
The event served as a reminder that every girl has the potential to become a role model, break barriers, and inspire others. The speaker concluded by urging all present to recognize the strength, resilience, and potential of girls and work collectively toward a future where their dreams can be fully realized.
The program began with an invocation by Asenla, PO of BMSCH, followed by a special performance by the children of the Home. The event was chaired by Pezet Newme, who delivered the closing remarks.
