The French head of state will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a few other Israeli leaders. Macron is expected to call for the “preservation of the civilian population” in Gaza, as Israel carries out a relentless bombardment of the Palestinian enclave and prepares for a ground offensive, the presidency said.
Macron’s visit is also expected to appeal for a “humanitarian truce” to allow needed aid into Gaza, whose 2.4 million people have been largely deprived of water, food, electricity and other basic supplies after an Israeli blockade, mentioned the Elysee Palace. Macron and Netanyahu were due to hold a joint press conference at 1 p.m.
