The Department of Information Technology and Communications has informed that, in pursuance to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)’s letter No.G-6/(2)/2025-QoS (E-15876), dated 06.05.25, to address the problem of unsolicited and fraudulent communications which have become a serious challenge in preserving public trust and ensuring effective delivery of legitimate information, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has assigned “1600 number series” to the Government (Centre/State) entities for making service and transactional voice calls to the citizens, such as applications for passport, birth/death certificates, driving license, tax reminders, etc, to enable citizens to easily recognize, trust and answer such calls.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has notified the second amendment to the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR), 2018, vide Regulations 22.(i).(i).(A) (enclosed) has also instructed Telecom Service providers to allocate this series promptly to authorized entities.

In this regard, all the concerned Departments under the State Government have been requested to ensure early adoption of “1600 number series” for all future government service and transactional calls to ensure a secure and citizen-friendly telecom ecosystem while enhancing the credibility, outreach and effectiveness of Government programs.
