Jail inspection and legal awareness programme held at Kiphire District Jail

A Jail Inspection was conducted on October 24 at the District Jail, Kiphire by the Jail Visiting Committee comprising Neiko Akami, NJS, Member Secretary, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), DIG (Prisons), Superintendent of Jail, Central Jail Dimapur, and Holika Sukhalu, NJS, Secretary, Kiphire District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA).

The Committee inspected all sections of the jail premises and interacted with both Under-Trial Prisoners (UTPs) and convicts. During the inspection, the Committee noted several issues concerning the condition of the wards and made several recommendations.

The Committee recommended for repair and renovation of all prison wards; proper and complete electrical wiring in all sections; and installation of a European commode in the female ward.

Following the inspection, a Legal Awareness Programme was organised by the Kiphire District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) within the jail premises. The programme was chaired by Ayiala Imti, Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel (LADC).

During the programme, through the initiative of KDLSA, the Nagaland State Cooperative Bank Ltd., Kiphire Branch, handed over a new set of computer to the jail authorities for the purpose of providing vocational training to the inmates. The keynote address was delivered by Holika Sukhalu, NJS, Secretary, KDLSA, who highlighted the importance of reformation and rehabilitation through legal awareness and vocational initiatives.

Panel Lawyer, Limkhushi Thongliu presented an informative session on prisoners’ rights, which was well received by the 11 inmates currently lodged in the facility.

Neiko Akami, NJS, Member Secretary, NSLSA, addressed the inmates with words of encouragement, explaining the role and functioning of Legal Services Institutions at the District, State, and National levels. He further assured the prisoners that their concerns had been duly noted.

In his concluding remarks, the Member Secretary, NSLSA, exhorted the KDLSA team to continue their dedicated efforts and ensure that legal services reach every section of society, particularly the marginalized and underprivileged.
