The Jangpetkong Kaketshir Telungjem Mungdang (JKTM) has strongly condemned the recent incident of rape reportedly committed against a student on September 30, 2025 in Mokokchung Town.

In a condemnation note, JKTM stated that the alleged crime, purportedly perpetrated by Sumon Subba (27 years), son of Jay Bahadur Subba, was an affront to the values and morals of the community and demanded the “severest condemnation.”

The student body said there was “absolutely no justification for such a heinous crime,” expressing full solidarity with the survivor and urging authorities to act swiftly and decisively to ensure justice without delay. The statement emphasized the need for compassion, protection, and access to necessary legal and psychological services for survivors of sexual violence.

Calling rape not only a personal trauma but also a societal failure, JKTM urged the administration, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to break the culture of silence and ensure that such crimes are met with zero tolerance. It affirmed that the organization “will not remain silent spectators to injustice” and would take every step necessary if authorities fail to act decisively.

The student body also voiced concern over public narratives that focus on irrelevant details about the survivor’s life or her prior association with the accused. It said such discussions amount to victim-blaming and shift accountability away from the perpetrator.

“The responsibility for sexual assault lies solely with the perpetrator,” the statement read, underscoring that consent must be explicit, ongoing, and voluntary, and that its absence means “no.”

In its continuation statement, JKTM addressed the misuse of media and social media platforms by individuals highlighting the survivor’s personal history instead of the crime itself. It cautioned that such actions could re-traumatize the survivor and undermine the pursuit of justice.

The organization urged the public to focus on the crime, legal processes, and the broader societal issue of sexual violence rather than on peripheral details that could harm the survivor’s credibility.

Appealing to the media fraternity, JKTM called on journalists to stand as allies in advocating for truth and justice and to ensure that public attention remains on the crime and accountability.

Concluding the statement, JKTM described the current situation as “a critical juncture for our community,” urging everyone to stand in solidarity with the survivor and reaffirm the shared commitment to a culture rooted in safety, respect, and unequivocal consent.
