The Kiphire Helipad and the launch of the chopper service have altogether eased transport difficulties for locals, especially for those undergoing medical treatment. While a road journey from Kiphire to Dimapur takes about 11 – 12 hours, by chopper the journey takes only 45 minutes.

However, it is reported that the central location of the helipad has been seen as a hub of many ‘antisocial’ activities mostly involving youngsters turning the helipad ground into a squander and waste pit which have drawn the attention and concern of both residents and officials.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, a nearby resident of helipad ground shared his grievances over the extra responsibility residents have had to take in keeping the area clean. Despite mass social works being undertaken in the area, the residents often end up having to clean the area daily as collected wastes including liquor bottles, water bottles, wrappers, cut weeds are left in piles without proper disposal.

According to sources, the dumping trucks which were availed under the Swatch Bharat Mission remain unutilized or infrequently used due to technical malfunctions.

When the chopper lands, residents say thick clouds of dust and waste are kicked up from the rotor making it hazardous for their health and interfering in their daily activities.

In this context, the DC of Kiphire had earlier issued an order strictly restricting the public from entering the helipad ground except for transport and emergency services.

However, the effectiveness of this notification is yet to be determined. Collective community participation and corporation are crucial for this to work.

Noting this, during the DPDB meeting on Friday, DC Kiphire Wati Aier had strongly urged officers, student organisations, ward leaders, tribal bodies and the public at large to equally take responsibility in the maintenance of the helipad and monitor the activities prevalent in the area.

The DC also mentioned that the need for a proper boundary wall around the helipad has already been made known to the government. For the time being, the district administration has put up a temporary gate at the entrance of the helipad ground to prevent the public from entering the site.

Wati also stated, “The Helipad service serves as a vital lifeline route for emergency and public transport service for Kiphirians.”

He further affirmed that the administration was doing its best for the primary benefit of the people of Kiphire.
