International Coffee Day was observed in Kiphire town with the launch of a coffee bar on Saturday.
Organised by the Department of Land Resources under the PMKSY-WDC 2.O scheme, the coffee bar was set up and inaugurated at Smokey Pots Restaurant, near Silver Bakery.
PMKSY-WDC 2.O – PMSKY Watershed Development Component 2.0 – is a centrally sponsored scheme by the Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development.
The scheme focuses on area development, particularly those of rainfed or degraded land, through watershed management. It also aims to promote watershed sustainability and the livelihoods of local people by strengthening community based local institutions.
At the coffee bar launch, Lipichem, DPO of Kiphire land resources department, gave an overview of coffee plantations in the district.
He said Land Resources was the nodal department to promote coffee in the district.
The DPO stated that the land resources department of Kiphire had supplied coffee saplings (Arabica) for the first time during 2017-18. Every year since then, the department has been supplying saplings to interested beneficiaries and project villages.
Between 2021-22, the department has collected around 92.6kgs of harvested parchment coffee beans, the DPO said.
The land resources department has distributed coffee saplings under PMKSY-WDC 2.O to project villagers and interested coffee growers in the district this year too, he added.
D Robin, ADC of Kiphire was the special guest of the event. Congratulating the Department of Land Resources for taking such an initiative, he requested the department to provide assistance to the farmers from planting season till harvest time. The ADC also encouraged the beneficiaries to hold on to the progress made and give the taste of coffee to people in the district.

After the coffee bar launch, Nagaland Tribune contacted the manager of Smokey Pots Restaurant who said there is certainly a space and the potential for coffee in Kiphire district. He thanked the administration for their support in the struggle to promote coffee.
