Kiphire: Pungro Town unite to provide better learning condition for GMS students

Kiphire: Initiative an incredible example of community responsibility and ownership

Pungro Town came together on Tuesday to renovate Government Middle School (GMS), Pungro Town, Kiphire in order to provide the students and teachers with better learning environment.

Established in 1956, GMS Pungro Town has the highest enrolment in Kiphire district with 368 students but has been struggling from lack of proper infrastructure and insufficient teachers for decades. Currently, there are only 12 teachers in the school.

On Tuesday, the community renovated four classrooms and repaired the flooring and corridors with the donations from various departments, CSOs and individuals amounting to Rs 1,59,100 wherein 70 people wholeheartedly volunteered themselves to the completion of the task.

The participants included Kiphire district administration, School Management Committee (SMC), teacher, Pungro Area College Students Union, Pungro Town Students Union, Yimkhiung Liberü Arihako, Yimkhiung Women Organisation, GBs Pungro, Public Forum Pungro sub-division, Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC), department under Pungro sub-division, Medical Ward Pungro, Hindu Milan Mandir Pungro, individuals and well-wishers.

GMS Pungro Town has been instrumental in providing education to the people of Pungro and its surrounding population since it’s inception.

The school extended its heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who came forward for community participation financially and physically. It stated most of the students belong to low-income families and that the gesture will directly give hope and encouragement to the children and remind them that they are not alone in the struggle for better education.

The initiative has shown incredible example of community responsibility and ownership and the school remain indebted to the people of Pungro, GMS Pungro Town said.
