A joint team of South Police Station and the Anti-Extortion Team (South) Kohima today apprehended one person identified as Mathungo Ovung (71), s/o Late Etsonimo Ovung, resident of Lerie, Kohima, who is SS Dy Kilonser of NNC/FGN.
Police also recovered cash amounting to Rs 4200, one Vivo mobile phone, three demand slips purportedly of FGN and one Maruti Ritz car bearing registration number NL 07 C 2974, along with vehicle documents and ignition key.
According to PRO Kohima Police, credible information was received on December 8 at around 2 p.m. regarding one person reportedly approaching shopkeepers at the PR Hill commercial area and demanding money in the name of a purported underground organisation.
Treating the information with utmost seriousness, police teams initiated immediate action to verify the report and assess the situation on the ground.
As part of the response measures, a South PS duty personnel along with DIB was promptly dispatched to the location. Although the suspect had left the area before the team’s arrival, continuous follow-up measures were undertaken. Plainclothes personnel were deployed and activated in and around the locality, and enquiry and search operations were thereafter initiated to identify and locate the suspect.
On December 9, based on leads developed through these sustained efforts, a joint team of South Police Station and the Anti-Extortion Team (South) successfully apprehended one male individual identified as Mathungo Ovung (71 years) from the PR Hill area near the Jack & Jill showroom.

The individual has been taken into custody, and a suo motu case has been registered at Kohima South Police Station vide Kohima South PS Case No. 0043/25 U/S 302(2)(3) BNS R/W Section 7 of the NSR ’62
Further investigation is underway to determine and identify any additional links or activities associated with the case.
Stating that Kohima Police remains firmly committed to ensuring the safety and security of the public, it urged all citizens and business establishments to promptly report any extortion-related incidents or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or the police helpline.
