Kohima Science College celebrates International Women’s Day

The International Women’s Day was celebrated at Kohima Science College on March 8, as part of their Origin Fest 2024, informed DIPR. The event was aimed to honor and appreciate the resilience and strength of women around the world.

During the College Cultural Day, the Vice Principal of KSCJ, Moasangla Jamir, emphasized the need to embrace diversity and the cultural differences that bring people together. The celebration served as a reminder of the importance of mutual respect and understanding, particularly in the context of Naga culture.

Coinciding with the festivities, International Women’s Day was celebrated to recognize the significant contributions women have made throughout history. Vice Principal Jamir called for a world where every woman and girl can pursue their dreams without limitations, emphasizing the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of their background or gender.

Advocate cum panel lawyer, Vimeno Kuotsu Nakhro, delivered a message on International Women’s Day, emphasizing the need for women to be educated about their rights. She highlighted the constitutional provisions in India that grant equality to women and empowers the state to adopt measures of positive discrimination to address the socio-economic, educational, and political disadvantages faced by them.

Nakhro provided a comprehensive overview of the constitutional privileges for women, including their rights to protection under criminal law, interim compensation for rape victims, special laws for the protection of women, marital rights, maintenance rights, property rights, and succession under the law applicable to Christians.

She also discussed the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act of 2012, which not only protects children but also women from sexual assaults and harassment. Nakhro emphasized that certain individuals are entitled to free Legal Aid, including members of Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes, victims of human trafficking or begging, women or children, victims of drug abuse, and individuals with disabilities. Nakhro also encouraged women to come forward with their grievances, highlighting the help available from the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority.

The International Women’s Day celebration at Kohima Science College aimed to raise awareness of women’s rights and empower women and girls to know their rights in order to achieve gender equality and justice.
