The Konyak Union has requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to postpone the date of counting of the 43 Tapi Assembly Constituency bye-election which is scheduled to be held on 3 December 2023 which falls on a Sunday.
In its letter dated 3 November 2023, KU stated that the Sunday holds “immense religious significance for the people of Mon district” and urged ECI to respect sentiments and religious practices of the majority Christian population in the district.

The Konyak Union also highlighted that conducting the counting on this auspicious day may disrupt the “day of worship and spiritual reflection” as this day in the election process is “often unpredictable and can be accompanied by tension and potential incidents of violence.” It therefore appealed that ECI to postpone the vote count day for 43 Tapi by-poll “to a more suitable day, which does not interfere with the religious practices and sentiments of the people.”
The Konyak Union further expressed hope that such consideration from the Election Commission will contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious election process.
Earlier on 10th October 2023, a day after ECI announced the election dates for the 43 Tapi constituency, the Naga People’s Front had protested the date of counting on a Sunday, “a very solemn Day of Worship for the entire Christians”. The party had also written to ECI and appealed that the date be rescheduled.
