In a significant achievement, Kohima Smart City Development Limited has been honoured with the Zonal Smart City Award (North East Zone) in the prestigious Indian Smart Cities Award Contest 2022. The announcement was made by Kezha Theunuo, Chief Executive Officer of KSCDL, during a press conference held at the Smart City Office Conference Hall on Wednesday.
The India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) was orchestrated under the aegis of the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. Kohima Smart City was not only bestowed with the Zonal Smart City Award but also recognized as a top performer for its exceptional contributions towards data governance by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The accolades highlight Kohima Smart City’s remarkable dedication to innovative, impactful, and scalable solutions. Notably, the city excelled in three vital intervention categories: “Street for People,” “Cycle for Change,” and “Nurturing Neighbourhood Challenges,” earning commendation and cash incentives for its exceptional work.

Kezha Theunuo emphasized that the awards signify a crucial recognition of pioneering city strategies, projects, and ideas that foster innovation and positive impact, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for all citizens.
The CEO acknowledged the challenges faced during the Smart City project, including delays due to project finalization, changes in funding patterns, and weather conditions. He mentioned that despite these challenges, 32 projects have been completed out of the total 34 undertaken. The CEO also highlighted a change in funding patterns, where the state government contributed 10% of the Ministry’s share, leading to a revised project cost of 550 crore INR.
Projects underway include Slum Area Development, Rainwater Harvesting, Battle Tank Development, Mini Sports Complex, Local Ground at City Centre, Hotel Building, Commercial Building, and Multilevel Parking at City Centre. The CEO informed that the multi-level parking will be inaugurated before Hornbill Festival 2023.
The completion of pay-and-use toilets, receiving State and Ministry shares, and the expectation of further project completions within a specific timeline were also discussed during the press conference.
The recognition and awards reflect Kohima’s commitment to innovative urban development and the promotion of a better quality of life for its citizens.
