KVK Zunheboto Nagaland University commemorates International Year of Millets

Zunheboto: Farmers urged to cultivate Millets and learn value additions to earn more income

Celebrating the International Year of Millets with the rest of the world, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Zunheboto, Nagaland University too commemorated the Day by conducting the 3rd Millet Recipe Contest at Lumami village on September 20 with Dr Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, Principal Scientist and Head, KVK, Nagaland University, as the Chief Host.

Competitors from nine self help groups (SHGs) of Lumami Village came forward to participate in the contest.

The program was chaired by Narola Anichari, Technical officer (Home science) KVK, NU.

Dr Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia exhorted the gathering to reintroduce millet in their daily diet as it has multiple advantages over other crops and illustrated a number of health issues which can be managed by taking millets in the daily diet like controlling of diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, celiac disease, osteoporosis etc.

Dr Chaurasia urged the farmers to start cultivating Millets which can fetch a premium price in the market, and further encouraged the women SHGs to go for value addition in millets which will help them earn more income.

During the Millet recipe contest, a number of items such as millet pancakes, millet cupcakes, millet biscuits, millet pakora, steamed millet, millet laddu etc. were prepared by the contestants. Cash award and certificates were given to the five best SHG’s.

The concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr Visakho Shunyu, Chief Technical Officer (GPB/AGR) KVK, NU.
