A mudslide triggered by incessant rainfall on July 5 near the Old KMC dumping site, which caused major disruption to traffic movement along the Kohima–Dimapur highway, was cleared by the NH Public Works Department (PWD), in coordination with the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), engineers and other concerned officials today.
It may be mentioned that on July 5, landslides at the Old KMC dumping site had compelled authorities to divert vehicular movement through the Jotsoma bypass, resulting in temporary rerouting of heavy motor vehicles, heading from Dimapur to Kohima and onward to Imphal.
According to ASI, S Mar, North Traffic Kohima, who was the duty officer today, traffic personnel have been deployed round-the-clock in hourly shifts to manage the traffic and ensure smooth vehicular flow. He said daily reports are being submitted to higher authorities for necessary action.
Though the affected stretch of road was promptly cleared, ASI Mar expressed that while the concerned authorities work on the area when such incidents occur, there is hardly any further maintenance works taken up.
He further stated that no accidents or casualties have been reported so far. Warning boards and public caution signs have been put up by the traffic department to alert commuters, he said and urged commuters, particularly those commuting along the highway, to exercise caution and take necessary safety measures in view of the unpredictable weather conditions and potential for further landslides.
