Mokokchung: Er Toshikaba stresses importance of grassroot efforts to achieve SDG goals

The Langpangkong Union Mokokchung convened its 34th General Meeting on 25th May 2024, at the Town Hall Mokokchung. The event was graced by the presence of Er. Toshikaba, Executive Engineer of PWD (R&B) Mokokchung, and Marsanen Imsong, the newly elected President of Ao Senden.

In his address, Er. Toshikaba recalled that Nagaland became the 16th State of India in 1963, initially comprising the districts of Kohima, Mokokchung, and Tuensang. Reflecting on the state’s progress, he highlighted the pivotal role of the Ao community in adopting Christianity and education early on. “We the Ao’s were the first to embrace Christianity and education and so on, and today we are called the pioneers… all because we have made it happen first, giving glory to God who has bestowed blessings upon the Ao’s,” he remarked.

The Executive Engineer also discussed the history of the Langpangkong Tzükong Mungdang (LTM), founded in 1933 with the goal of advocating for road construction and unity. He commended the Langpangkong Union Mokokchung for its 34 years of existence, noting that over a thousand Langpangkong Tzükong families reside in Mokokchung Town. “How are we living, how do we live, and what are our thoughts on our future are things to introspect,” he said.

Emphasizing sustainable development, Toshikaba referred to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Mission 2030, which aims to preserve the world by 2030. He stressed the importance of grassroot efforts to achieve these goals, mentioning the 17 aims which include no poverty, quality education, clean energy, and sustainable cities among others. He urged the community to leverage technological advancements and work together towards these objectives.

Toshikaba also pointed out the potential of utilizing available land for sustainable living, rather than relying solely on government jobs and services. He emphasized the need to preserve natural resources and avoid practices that harm the environment, such as pollution from industries and hunting wildlife.

In his inaugural speech as President of Ao Senden, Marsanen Imsong expressed pride in his new role and a commitment to the Ao community’s advancement. He highlighted the historical importance of LTM, founded with the vision of road connectivity and unity, and stressed the need for comprehensive development today. He called for collective efforts towards the prosperity of the Langpangkong people and the broader Naga community.

The Ao Senden President assured that he, along with his office bearers, is committed to addressing stagnant economic development and emphasized the need for wisdom, knowledge, and prayers from the community to support their initiatives. He noted the importance of utilizing government schemes effectively for land development.

Imsong also highlighted the unique cultural diversity of the Langpangkong Tzükong range and Mokokchung district, which includes the presence of Phoms and Changs. He expressed pride in this diversity and encouraged all villages to ensure inclusive development, leaving no one behind.

Earlier, the meeting commenced with an address by Imlimatsung, President of Langpangkong Senso Telongjem, followed by an invocation by Bendang Jamir, Pastor of MTBA. The gathering presented the anthem, “Ku Langpangkong,” and a cultural folk song was performed by Mokokchung Town Chuchuyimlang Senso Telongjem.
