The Langpangkong Students’ Conference(LKM) has announced the declaration of a ‘Plastic-Free Campus’ on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day. Stressing the importance of preserving the world’s air and water, students has been urged to recognize their responsibility. Since the Langpangkong Students’ Conference(LKM) Office took the initiative on World Environment Day in 2023, refraining from using ‘single-use plastic’, the campus has successfully avoided its usage in office operations. Overcoming these challenges, today marks the official declaration of a ‘Plastic-Free Campus’ by Imlinok, the President of Lkm Office, and Meyitongpang, the General Secretary, informed a press release by LKM.
During the event, the Ao Students’ Conference(AKM) extended gratitude to the leaders of the LKM for their commendable decision to establish a ‘Plastic-Free Campus’. Furthermore, the AKM emphasized that by maintaining this vision and determination, it will pave the way for a new and brighter future, benefiting not only the Ao community but also the broader Naga community.
“Amidst the rising temperatures worldwide, all learners and members of the Ao community must maintain a positive spirit and focus on their responsibilities to safeguard the environment. While plastic pollution may not seem to directly impact our Naga community now, it is crucial to recognise that in the near future, our community will indeed face pollution challenges. Therefore, starting today, it is imperative to educate oneself on plastic waste management and segregation,” stated the LKM. Commending the initiative, Lanutoshi Aie, President of AKM encouraged every Ao community and society to adopt and practice these essential measures.
In a significant effort to protect the environment, various Student units under LKM have collaborated together to focus on maintaining the cleanliness of rivers like Dikhu, Milak, and Longpong in the Langpangkong region, which are popular among the local community. Signboards were set up with important messages and examples urging people not to litter in these rivers. Additionally, iron dustbins were strategically placed in different locations to facilitate proper waste disposal. The Lkm office highlighted the immense value of Dikhu, Milak, and Longpong rivers to the Naga community. “While in the past, it was common practice to discard garbage in rivers, there is now a growing awareness of the importance of preserving and cleaning these water bodies,” mentioned the LKM. The President of LKM emphasized the need to cherish these beautiful rivers and underscored the significance of protecting the diverse wildlife they support. Recognizing individuals who strive to protect birds, fishes, and other animals by avoiding the use of harmful chemicals, Lkm expressed gratitude. The council, students, departments, NGOs, entrepreneurs, and various societies were encouraged to join hands in this noble cause. It is hoped that every leader will play a role in safeguarding our environment for future generations.
