The Nagaland University’s Department of Sociology, Lumami, organised  a lecture as part of its Sociology Lecture Series on October 4, 2024 in a blended mode, informed a press release by the PRO, NU. The event featured Professor Anjan Chakrabarti, Director of UGC Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre, North Bengal University, who delivered an insightful presentation titled “Silk Route to Look East/Act East: North East India in Perspective.”

Professor Chakrabarti offered a comprehensive analysis of Northeast India’s historical trajectory. His lecture expertly traced the region’s development through three distinct periods: precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial. A key focus of his presentation was challenging the prevalent notion of the Northeast’s isolation, arguing instead that the region maintained strong historical connections until the British colonial administration’s territorial reorganization disrupted established trade routes and developmental pathways.

Similarly the conflict and security interests have further hampered the growth of economic opportunities in the region. His analysis provided valuable insights into how these geopolitical changes shaped the region’s development trajectory and current circumstances.

The session was moderated by Dr. Suraj Beri, Asst. Professor, Dept of Sociology and it attracted active participation from both scholars and students, fostering engaging academic discussions. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Dipika Paul, Asst. Professor, Dept of Sociology.
