The Living for Environment (LiFE), a non-government organisation, in collaboration with Tuensang Town Council imparting training of trainers (ToT) on waste management on Monday at Town Hall, Tuensang.
Speaking on proper waste management, Aokonang, Vice Chairman of LiFE and the resource person of the awareness programme, emphasised on keeping the Town clean and healthy and stated “your waste is your responsibility”. He highlighted the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and the duties, role and responsibilities of UBLs in the implementation of solid waste management.
Aokonang also informed that Tuensang generates approximately 13.85 tonnes per day (TPD) or 13,850 kgs of waste.
Speaking on waste segregation, he said that throwing of waste including food, plastic and chemicals affect the environment and health. He elaborated that plastic waste is a major cause of pollution even in Nagaland and mentioned that it is clogging the streams and drains.
The Chairman of LiFE pointed out that plastics find its way to our food and that people ingest 5 grams of plastic per week. He therefore encouraged the gathered to take initiative of segregate at home by using three separate bins for wet, dry and re-use waste disposal and to be responsible for their own waste, spread awareness to the surrounding
Earlier the session was divided into four sections and attended by Government employees, Ward Sanitary Committees, healthcare facilities, street vendors, educational and religious institutions within Tuensang District.
