The Lotha Middle Range Students’ Union (LMRSU) has expressed deep concern over the escalating human-wildlife conflict in the Lotha region, particularly the increasing incidents of elephants encroaching upon agricultural lands, resulting in massive crop destruction and the tragic loss of human life.
In a statement issued Union president, Rhonbemo Murry and general secretary, Lichon Kithan, today, the LMRSU highlighted that the conflict, which has intensified over the years due to expanding human settlements and economic activities, has now reached crisis proportions.
It stated that in July, elephant herds destroyed rubber plantations, crops, and temporary shelters in areas such as Sanis, Akuk, Moilan, and Aree Village, adding the loss of life on August 2 in Wokha District underscores the urgency of the situation.
The Union lamented that despite the concerned MLA’s repeated efforts to bring this issue to the attention of the relevant Minister and department, insufficient precautionary measures have been implemented to protect civilians and farmers, impacting their livelihoods.
The LMRSU urged the Forest Department to take immediate and decisive action and conduct comprehensive surveys to monitor elephant movements, engaging with local communities for awareness and preparedness and ensure timely compensation for affected farmers and victims’ families.
The Union also recommended installing physical deterrents to protect farmland and rescuing and rehabilitating distressed elephants to prevent further losses on both sides.

The LMRSU appealed to the government to treat this crisis seriously and implement long-term, sustainable strategies that promote peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.
“Failure to act will leave vulnerable communities with no choice but to defend their lives and livelihoods, potentially leading to tragic consequences for both humans and wildlife,” it said and expressed dissatisfaction with the concerned authorities for their inaction and demands immediate attention to this growing threat.
