Longkhum Cherry Blossom Festival begins with tributes to former home minister Tali Namo for planting trees

Mokokchung: Festival features food fiesta with music and games, multi-cuisine food stalls, handicrafts and agricultural products and Children’s Playzone

Nagaland today marked the first-ever Longkhum Cherry Blossom Festival 2023 kicked off under the theme “In Unison with Nature.” Organized by Longkhum Tourism Development and under the aegis of Longkhum Village Council, the festival was inaugurated by T. Tatong Longchar, District Fishery Officer, Mokokchung.

Longchar commended the Longkhum Tourism Committee for pioneering this unique festival, emphasizing the collective responsibility of all Longkhum citizens. He acknowledged the visionary initiative of Late Tali Namo, the former Home Minister, who planted cherry plants along the Alichen to Longkhum main road in the 1980s, laying the foundation for today’s festival.

Encouraging gratitude for nature’s blessings, Longchar sees the festival as an opportunity to boost tourism and foster unity. He urged individuals to lead with responsibility, emphasizing that societal progress depends on recognizing and fulfilling one’s duties.

In his greetings, C. Angang Jamir, Chairman of Longkhum Village Council, praised the festival as a necessary evolution in the face of a changing world. Notably, the cherry trees, now 40 years old, stand as a testament to Longkhum’s rich history.

Rongpangwati from the Tourism Committee explained the festival’s origin, revealing that the cherry plantation, initiated by Late Tali Namo, was rediscovered after 40 years. Motivated by the influx of tourists, the Tourism Committee collaborated together with the Longkhum Village Council and Longkhum Students Union to turn this hidden gem into a vibrant festival.

Pangeryapang, Convenor of Longkhum Tourism Committee expressed plans to make the festival to be celebrated annually, learning and growing each year. With dreams of international recognition, the committee aims to showcase Longkhum’s natural beauty to the world. The committee emphasized that this is just the beginning, and they aspire to work towards making the Longkhum Cherry Blossom Festival an internationally acclaimed event, exposing the world to the natural wonders of Longkhum Village.

Highlighting the Longkhum Cherry Blossom festival’s diverse offerings, attendees can enjoy a Food Fiesta with music and games, explore multi-cuisine food stalls, purchase handicrafts and agricultural products from SHGs, and engage in a Children’s Playzone. The festival also promises enchanting night walks under illuminated cherry blossoms and pine grove, creating an unforgettable experience.
