The District Administration, Longleng in an order dated, the 3rd June, 2024 has said a total ban on Single Use Plastic (SUP) was reiterated to eradicate serious environment and ecological challenges posed by the Rampant usage of the same.

The order informed that as per the Section 273 of The Indian Penal Code, 1860 prohibits sale of noxious food or drink (expired/ damaged) and it is stated that whoever sells, or offers or exposes for sale, as food or drink, any article which has been rendered or has become noxious, or is in a state unfit for food or drink, knowing or having reason to believe that the same is noxious as food or drink, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to 1000/- (one thousand rupees), or with both.

General provision under Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 provides for prohibition for selling, storing/ distribution of unsafe/ sub-standard food/ misbranded food products/ unhygienic or unsanitary processing or manufacturing of food. Section 124 in the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023 empowers the urban local body to levy Sanitation Fee, License Fee & Utility Services Charges.

Under section 25 & 26 in the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 empanels penalty provisions for use of nonstandard weight or measure and alteration of weight and measure.

As such it has directed all concerned individuals/ institutions/ commercial establishments to adhere to the relevant regulations/ by law as established with regard to the above in the interest of the public/ consumers services.

Further, necessary inspection shall be conducted timely and that any individual/ establishments found in contravention of the above shall be liable for penalty as deemed under the relevant Acts/regulation.
