Lotha Students’ Union holds Inter School & College Cultural Event 2023

Wokha: DBHSS Principal presses for Lotha language to be taught in all schools of Wokha district before it is forgotten

The Lotha Students’ Union conducted Inter School & College Cultural Event 2023 under the theme “Inspiring the Younger Generation Through Culture and Tradition” on Friday, 13th October at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Wokha.

Special Guest, Dr Zubenthung Kikon, Chief Medical Officer, Wokha, appreciated the Lotha Students’ Union for taking the initiative and mentioned that there is so much to gain from such significant events.

“If we unite, learn and share together, tomorrow will be a victorious day as tomorrow is a consequence of what we do today,” he stated.

The CMO Wokha lamented that we are forgetting the cultural and traditional values such as ideas, customs, social behaviour, traditional skills set by our forefathers and encouraged the students that one has to be energetic to seek and strive to learn all about the cultures and tradition value. Dr Kikon further urged them to take this opportunity in enhancing their skills, to master them and continue to practice daily to preserve culture and tradition.

Rev. Fr. T.C Joseph, Principal, DBHSS Wokha, in his welcome note expressed appreciation to the Lotha Students’ Union for organising the cultural event. He informed that such events had been halted due to the pandemic and expressed hope that these events will be conducted with frequency.

He said that such an event shows us our own way of life and helps us to learn our vibrant traditions, customs and added that it was a serious matter to not know one’s culture. Rev. Fr. T.C Joseph said that urbanization is threatening culture and pointed out that language is a clear indicator of a dying culture. Asserting that culture is translated through language, he stressed that the Lotha language should be given importance to sustain it.

DBHSS Principal pressed that Lotha language should be taught in all the schools of Wokha district before it is forgotten. He further also called for platforms where students can practise writing stories in Lotha, compose poems, write dramas, collect folklores so that they can be published and inserted in the syllabus.

Later, traditional exhibitions like folk dance, essay writing, bamboo basket making, knitting, painting, bamboo walk and fire making, Spelling Bee (Competition) were conducted.

The event was chaired by Thungbeni Kikon, Former Social and Cultural secretary, Lotha Students’ Union while DBHSS, Wokha Students presented a Lotha traditional song.
