The Lotha Students’ Union organised the 2nd Inter-District Cultural Fest 2024 under the theme “Balancing Cultural Growth with Modern Civilization” on 4th October at Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha.
Dr. Chumben Murry, Advisor to Chief Minister, Nagaland, who was the Special Chief Guest, at the event highlighted that culture extends beyond traditional attire to encompass traditional behaviour. He praised the richness and uniqueness of local culture, expressing regret over past neglect and urging everyone to value and preserve their cultural heritage. He commended the students for their enthusiastic participation and emphasised the need to balance modern traditions with the preservation of old customs.
Dr. Murry also discussed the importance of customary law, noting the confusion between judicial and customary law in minor issues, and advocated for legal practitioners to have formal training in customary law.
Also at the event, the District Cultural Officer of Wokha underscored the significance of understanding and celebrating local culture.
Y. Vungthungo Lotha, Senior Principal of GHSS Wokha, delivered the welcome address, stressing the importance of cultural events in fostering community spirit.
The event featured a variety of competitions, including exhibitions, folk dances, yodeling, painting, essays, knitting, and a bamboo walk. Pretty Petals School from Chukitong captivated the audience with a folk dance performance.
The fest was chaired by Khonzani Tsanglao, PGT at GHSS Wokha, with an invocation by Bikhamo Yanthan, Pastor of Humtso Baptist Church. Sixteen educational institutions from Wokha participated in this vibrant celebration of culture.
The event will continue until 5th October 2024.
