The 6th edition of Lt Emi Shitiri (IAS) Memorial Women’s Football and Volleyball Open Tournament concluded on 28 November with IG Sports Academy Kohima (football) and Team Ace Peren (volleyball) emerging as the champions of the respective sports.
Organised by the Wokha District Women Sports Association (WDWSA), the tournament was played at local ground Wokha.
IG Sports Academy Kohima lifted the champion’s trophy in football after defeating Pangti Village 2-0 in the final match.
In volleyball, Team Ace Peren beat Pangti Village Women’s Sports Association (25-22, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-14) in the final match.
Ajit Kumar Ranjan, IAS, Deputy Commissioner Wokha, graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest. He thanked the organisers, the WDWSA, for the immense effort they had put in successfully conducting the sport event in the district. Stating that women today excel in various sports, he said special emphasis and effort must be given for the participation of women in sports.
A strong woman is the foundation of a strong, stable and progressive society, the DC stated.
Noting that sports in Nagaland require a lot of infrastructural support, Ranjan said sports should be considered as part of education and society building. He also encouraged all the players to show sportsmanship and give their best efforts in their game. The DC further assured the WDWSA of his assistance towards conducting such events in the future.
The organising body of the tournament – the Wokha District Women’s Sports Association (WDWSA) – said this tournament was organised with the purpose to encourage and promote youngsters, especially women, in the field of sports in respect of Lt Emi Shitiri, the first Lotha IAS officer.
Six teams participated in the football category in the tournament while 14 teams participated in the volleyball category.
The tournament’s football champions, IG Sports Academy Kohima, walked away with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and the trophy. The runner-up, Pangti Village, received Rs 75,000.
The champions of the volleyball tournament, Team Ace Peren won a cash price of Rs 50,000 while runner-up Pangti Village Women’s Sports Association won Rs 30,000.
Awards for individual achievements during the tournament were also presented.
