The University Grants Commission (UGC) has reminded Higher Educational Institutions that the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree is not a recognized degree and cautioned against offering the program for the 2023-24 academic year. UGC has also advised students not to take admission for the same program.

In the notice issued on 26th December 2023, the Secretary, UGC, stated that a few Universities were inviting fresh applications for M.Phil. and therefore informed that as per the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, M. Phil. Program is discontinued and Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer M.Phil. program.

“The Universities authorities, therefore, are requested to take immediate steps to stop admissions to M.Phil. program for the 2023-24 academic year. Further, students are advised not to take admission in M.Phil. Program”, the notification stated.
