A Sub-divisional Horticulture Office was recently set up in Mangkolemba, Mokokchung.
The office was inaugurated by Anenla T Sato, IAS, commissioner and secretary of Horticulture and Women Resources Development on 14 October.
After unveiling the plague, Sato said the SDH office was established for the welfare of the people and therefore called upon the citizens to make the best use of it.
She also sought the cooperation of the public, the administration and the farmers to come forward in uplifting the horticulture sector in the sub-division.
Short speeches were also delivered by Dr Elithung Lotha, director of Horticulture, Langkosen Tsanglao, ADC of Mangkolemba and Lanuyanger, convenor of the All Ward Chairmen Association Mangkolemba.
Dr Lotha welcomed everyone and encouraged them to extend full support to the horticulture department in order to benefit the farming community.
Tsanglao noted that it was high time for all to take up gardening of horticulture vegetables. He encouraged all to grow more local produce and flood the market with home grown vegetables.
During the inauguration function, the welcome address was given by Imotemjen, District Horticulture Officer (DHO) Mokokchung while Dr Imchalemla, Sub-Divisional Horticulture Officer (SDHO) Tuli chaired the programme.
Dr Imchalemla later told Nagaland Tribune that the department had decided to create a sub-divisional horticulture office in Mangkolemba because the people there are “hard- working and diligent in whatever they do”. After noting the response of the Mangkolemba locals, the SDHO was established.
How does the office hope to serve the welfare of the people? According to Dr Imchalemla, the office will serve as a mediator and consultant, offering guidance with their technical knowledge to solve the problems of farmers. The office will also try to reach wider horizons with the cooperation of the people, she noted.
“The director said that the scope of horticulture is big as the place is near Assam. We should try to sell our produce to Assam”, said Dr Imchalemla.
