Manipur MP Akoijam says new attacks seek to heighten violence, further deepen intercommunity estrangement

Imphal: 1 dead in Moirang as militants fire long-range rockets

Dr A Bimol Akoijam, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Manipur has said that the “new phase” of violence in the State is aimed “to heighten the violence and correspondingly to further deepen the intercommunity estrangement and divide in Manipur to justify the dubious politics that seeks to destroy the state by breaking it up into different political and/or administrative units/arrangements on communal lines!”

His comments come in the aftermath of yesterday’s attack in two locations in Bishnupur District that killed one person and injured six in Moirang. The Manipur Police has alleged that Kuki militants deployed long-range rockets among the civilian population.

In a post on X platform, Dr Akoijam has questioned how such attacks are being carried out under the nose of the over 60,000 central troops currently posted in Manipur.

On 1 September 2024, two people were reportedly killed when militants deployed numerous rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) using high-tech drones on Koutruk village in West Imphal.

“Is this non-ending violence a question of inability or unwillingness of the GoI and its troops? But whichever way, it serves the violence of the political project to destroy Manipur!” the Lok Sabha MP said. Dr Akoijam also stated that it would be sad if the people urge for the involvement of the UN Peacekeeping Force to save life and rein in the violence.
