Manipur violence: Mother of toddler claims child died due to lack of money, medicines

Imphal: Girl’s family living in relief camp after house burnt down by mob

The mother of a deceased 2 year and 7 months old toddler in Manipur has alleged that the child had died at due to lack of money and medicines. The girl and her family were reportedly from Torbung, Govindpur in Churachandpur district but had been taking shelter at a relief camp at Thangjing Sindam Sanglen, Moirang in Bishnupur district due to the ongoing violence.

The mother informed that the baby girl developed breathing problems on 21 July 2023 for which they consulted a doctor at Community Health Centre Moirang who referred the child to Imphal. She was immediately taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal, Manipur where she passed away the same day.

The girl’s mother stated that the family’s shop, their livelihood, was burnt down along with their house by a mob.

The Committee of the relief camps said the doctors used to frequently visit but now the visits have been reduced to once a week. It also alleged that when they ask for medicines, doctors tell them that the government did not provide medicines.

The Committee stated that the incident of the toddler was unfortunate and appealed the Manipur government to look into the matter.
