National Technology Day is celebrated every year on May 11 to honour the scientists, researchers engineers and others who has initiated progress in the field of technology in India.
The theme for the National Technology Day 2024 is ‘Clean and Green Technologies for a sustainable future ‘
According to the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, the day is a significant milestone in the history of India’s technological innovations. India successfully tested it’s nuclear energy capability on this day in Pokhran on May 11, 1998. It is commemorated every year by honouring the architects of innovation.
The first National Technology Day was celebrated on May 11, 1999, and since then the commemoration has been used to amplify the country’s technological progress.

Each year, a theme for National Technology Day is chosen by the Technology Development Board (TDB).
As part of the National Technology Day celebration on May 11 every year, TDB announces the National Awards to industrial concerns for successful commercialization of indigenous technology. The second category of award was introduced for the first time in 2000 for SSI units which has been renamed as MSME Award. From 2017 onwards, a new category of award called ‘National Award for Start-Up’ has been introduced to encourage & promote technologies developed by start-ups having potential for commercialization.
Paying tribute to the technological contributors in India, Nagaland Governor La Ganesan tweeted, “Celebrating innovation and ingenuity on #NationalTechnologyDay, we honor the brilliant minds whose technological breakthroughs have propelled us into the future and improved our everyday lives. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”
