The Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) inaugurated its new office (temporary) on the first floor of the District Youth Hostel, Mokokchung on July 26.
Imkongchuba A., Chairperson of Mokokchung Municipal Council, during his exhortation at the inauguration of the MDFA Office, said that the occasion marked more than the opening of a physical structure.
He described the office as a symbol of MDFA’s vision, determination, and progress, stating that having a proper office is essential for accessibility, coordination, and further growth of the association. He acknowledged and appreciated the leadership of N Akok Longkumer, President of MDFA, and the contributions of its members.
He remarked that “MDFA has been more than an association—it has been a movement and a beacon, not only for Mokokchung but also for the Ao community. This new office is a milestone, a home that reflects MDFA’s purpose and potential.”
Highlighting the Association’s legacy, Imkongchuba said that MDFA has played a significant role in nurturing football talent in the district and the state over the years. He noted that its efforts have laid a strong foundation for football development in Mokokchung.
Looking ahead, he commended MDFA’s current initiatives, particularly the launch of the Zonal Association Program under the theme “Football at the Grassroots.” He said the program is a step in the right direction—reaching villages, schools, and untapped talent. He urged the association to focus on genuine development rather than merely viewing such initiatives as avenues for funding.
The Chairperson also lauded MDFA’s efforts in talent scouting and conducting coaching camps, encouraging them to continue nurturing the next generation of footballers.
He acknowledged the popularity of the annual MDFA Trophy, which has led to the formation of many clubs and development of skilled players. However, he emphasized that MDFA must move beyond just organizing tournaments. He urged the association to establish its own Football Academy, stating: “Let us not wait for the perfect time. Let’s start with what we have. MDFA has the strength and potential to make this possible.”

In conclusion, Imkongchuba called for renewed leadership within MDFA—leaders committed not to personal gain but to the welfare of the association. He said that with the inauguration of the new office, it is also time to reflect, correct past mistakes, and set a stronger direction for the future. He envisioned
MDFA producing players who will not only represent local clubs but also go on to represent Nagaland and the country at the national level.
The programme was chaired by Supongasang Jamir, General Secretary of MDFA, while the invocation was delivered by L Yanger Lemtur, Executive Member. N Akok Longkumer, President of MDFA, delivered the welcome address.
Rev. Talijungla, APW from Ungma Baptist Arogo, offered the dedicatory prayer. The event concluded with a mass prayer.
The newly inaugurated MDFA Office is housed at the District Youth Hostel, Mokokchung—a facility
originally constructed under a centrally sponsored scheme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports,
Government of India. The project was initiated in the early 1990s under a 75:25 funding model, with
75% of the cost to be borne by the Centre and 25% by the State Government of Nagaland.
While the Central Government released its full share, the State failed to contribute its full 25% share. As a result, the construction was left incomplete. The contractor subsequently closed off the site and abandoned the project, and the building remained unused for more than 30 years. A case has reportedly been registered and submitted against the State Government in this regard.
Despite these setbacks, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports continued periodic inspections of the site over the years. With due permission from the District Administration, the MDFA has now begun utilizing the space by inaugurating its new office there on a temporary basis.
