Medziphema Sub-Division Enforcement Committee meeting held

Medziphema Sub-division level enforcement committee held a meeting to discuss issues pertaining to monitoring regulation and enforcement of river bed mining activities in Chathe River and its tributaries at the ADC’s Conference Hall, Medziphema on November 24.

The meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Medziphema, P James Swu, where he welcomed all the members and highlighted the need to strengthen the monitoring regulation and enforcement of riverbed mining activities in Chathe River and its tributaries. He deliberated on the responsibilities of the enforcement committee citing that their goal should be to protect and revive Chathe River and its tributaries.

The representatives from the Department of Geology & Mining, Forest Department also clarified their roles and responsibilities at the meeting. Pherima Gaon Bura voiced their grievance and explained how mining is affecting the local communities and agriculture sector in the area. The meeting discussed the current status of riverbed mining in Chathe River, the ongoing mining and review of existing permits and licenses and action against the illegal mining activities.

The meeting also discussed community concerns and grievances, and the impact of mining in the local communities and its effects on agriculture and livelihoods. Key discussion point also includes routine inspection on Chathe River bed, action plans and assigned responsibilities to specific department.

The meeting also decided to clean and decorate all villages under Medziphema sub-division for beautification during the festive session. The meeting was attended by all members of enforcement committee
