A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered in Mokokchung district following allegations of sexual assault involving a minor, police officials said.
The accused, identified as the child’s father, was taken into custody on the evening of February 17. According to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), the incident occurred prior to the arrest, and the case has been registered at the Women Police Station under relevant sections of the POCSO Act. Investigation in the matter is underway.
The SDPO said police received information on February 17 and acted promptly. Medical examination of the minor has been conducted and the police are awaiting the medical report. Statements are still being recorded and evidence is still being collected as part of the investigation.
Police officials stated that the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has been involved from the very beginning, along with other stakeholders, including women’s organizations, to ensure coordinated support for the child.

Emphasizing the sensitivity of the case, the SDPO said details cannot be disclosed due to legal provisions safeguarding the identity and privacy of the minor. He also appealed for responsible reporting, noting that disclosure of sensitive information could adversely affect the child.
Reassuring the public, the SDPO said police are following all procedures and remain in constant coordination with stakeholders, with priority given to the well-being of the child so that the incident does not further affect her mental state.
The accused remains in police custody. Further details were withheld in view of statutory restrictions protecting the identity of the minor.
