Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly and former Speaker, Dr. Imtiwapang Aier passed away in today. He was 49.
As per family sources Dr. Aier breathed his last at a prayer centre in Dimapur.
His mortal remains will be brought to Kohima and state funeral will be held tomorrow in Kohima thereafter, his remains will be taken to his native village Sungratsu in Mokokchung district for burial.
Dr. Imtiwapang Aier contested his first election in the 2013 Nagaland Legislative Assembly election from 23 Impur Assembly constituency, which he won with a Congress ticket. Later, he merged with the Naga People’s Front (NPF) and held the charge of Parliamentary Secretary for Geology & Mining.
He also served as the Speaker to the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 2016.
In the 2018 Assembly elections, he contested from NPF and got elected. He remained in the opposition and in 2022 along with 20 other NPF MLAs he merged with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio in his condolence message expressed his deep sadness over the demise of the “promising public leader”.
He described the former Speaker as a young, dynamic, sincere, and hardworking person who was “passionate about his work and executed his assignments diligently”.
Dr. Imtiwapang was “jovial and a humble gentleman with a big heart, who cared much for society’s welfare”, Rio added.
He said that the death of Dr. Aier is a great loss for the state and his constituency but “his good deeds will always shine and his memories will forever be inscribed in our hearts.”
The CM offered prayers and sympathies to the family members, relatives, and friends of the departed.
Dr. Aier is survived by his wife, four daughters and one son.
Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton mourned the death of the MLA on Twitter where he wrote that the untimely passing of the “deeply passionate leader who touched the lives of so many” “has left us all heartbroken”.
