Congress General Secretary (Communication) and former union minister Jairam Ramesh has accused the Government of India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using “Bluff and Rule” policy in Nagaland and stressed that this government must be “eliminated”.

Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, Kohima on Wednesday, Ramesh said that the BJP government “bluffed” different groups in 2015, 2017 and 2022 without making any efforts towards solution. He elaborated on X:

“-   In 2015, the Modi Sarkar signed the Framework Agreement with the NSCN-IM. The details of the agreement were never revealed to the public. In November 2023, talks broke down once again

–   In 2017, the Modi Sarkar signed the Agreed Position with the Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs). No action has been taken since the agreement was signed

–   In 2022, the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation announced that they would abstain from the state elections unless Eastern Nagaland was granted autonomy. This abstention was lifted when the Home Ministry agreed to meet their demands in early 2023. A year later, the ENPO has been left hanging, and is now calling upon people to abstain from the election once again”

“The BJP government is shamelessly stringing along the people of Nagaland, with grand announcements that are followed by zero action. Its promises are only about headline management.”

Jairam Ramesh re-asserted the Party’s commitment to deliver permanent solution to the Naga political issue. He said that there is a lot of history, but we have to open a new chapter, embracing all sections of the Naga society. He maintained that ‘permanent solution’ to the Naga issue can only be achieved if the Union government is transparent

Article 371 (A) is scared to the Congress, he further declared, adding that any modification to this Article, particularly in ownership of land and resources is unacceptable to the Party.

Speaking on the Party’s promise to LGBTQIA+ community in its manifesto, which the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) is using to attack Congress, Jairam Ramesh clarified that the guarantee begins with “After wide consultation” and that “civil union” does not mean marriage but “a way of life”. He also added that the Party is just following up on what the Supreme Court of India has said. “We have not said anything revolutionary on this matter,” he said,
