Imphal: Shah says GoI has begun putting fence along Indo-Myanmar border and removed Free Movement Regime

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s priority is to maintain peace in Manipur. Canvassing for BJP candidate for Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency at Imphal, Shah accused the Congress of dividing the State but vowed that BJP would not let Manipur break.

3rd May 2024 will mark the one year since ethnic violence erupted in the State that has killed over 200 people, displaced over 60,000 people and keeping several thousands of children out of school.

In his speech, the BJP leader also claimed that the Inner Line Permit, given by the BJP government has strengthened Manipur. said that Chief Minister N Biren Singh had put the demand for ILP before the Prime Minister stating that Manipur cannot remain “united” without ILP.

Shah also asserted that the Government of India has begun putting fence along the Indo-Myanmar border and had removed the Free Movement Regime.

Earlier on Tuesday, Congress leader and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh alleged that the civil war-like situation in Manipur was a BJP-manufactured crisis and criticized PM Nodi for neither visiting the State nor speaking to the State’s CM, MLAs or political representatives. He reminded that the only time PM Modi had spoken on the issue was for three minutes on 10 August 2023.

Recently, in an interview to Assam Tribune, PM Modi proclaimed that “Because of the timely intervention of the Government of India and efforts made by the Government of Manipur, there has been a marked improvement in the situation of the State.”

The latest incidence of violence reported from Manipur took place on the morning of 13th April 2024 when two Kuki youth were butchered in the Phailengmol region of Kangpokpi District. Kuki organisations claim that Meitei armed vigilante group, Arambai Tenggol, allegedly aided by the Meitei Police Commandos carried out the gruesome act.

The youths, Kamminlal Lupheng and Kamlengsat Lunkim were 23 and 22 years old respectively.
