Mokokchung: Body of abducted Chungtia resident found, investigation underway

Mokokchung: The victim and his friend had been missing since the Tuesday evening while they were returning home from Chungtiayimsen after attending a funeral

The nephew of ex-MLA Late Nokzenketba, Chungtia Village in 28 Koridang AC, Mokokchung, was found dead on 22 February between Satier and New Camp, Mokokchung about 10 kilometres away from Chungtia village in Mokokchung district, according to sources.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, Bendang, chairman, Chungtia Village Council stated that the deceased, Imkongchiba Kichu, was in his early 30s.

The victim and his friend, both residents of Chungtia village, had been missing since the evening of 21 February while they were returning home from Chungtiayimsen after attending a funeral. He informed that on their way back, some unrecognized persons attacked the vehicle they were travelling in and abducted him after assaulting his companion.

Sources have informed that the deceased friend who escaped is in critical condition.

The chairman of Chungtia village also informed that Kichu’s body was discovered in a forested area around the said location around 3:00 PM.

He also confirmed that the Chungtia Village Council had launched a search operation on Tuesday night after the getting the news of the abduction from family members and later announced him ‘missing’. They kept looking for him even on Wednesday but eventually the body was recovered by the victim’s relatives.

Bendang also informed that the police had performed post-mortem on the body and the family members had received it thereafter. He stated that the village council is cooperating with the police investigation and awaits the police report.

Meanwhile, Chungtia Students’ Union has condemned the “most cowardly and inhuman act”, stating that the union will not rest till the criminals are punished according to the law and urged the district administrative body to serve justice at the earliest.

“Such level of violence is not the answer to anything in today’s world,” the statement said.

It also offered its sincere condolence to the family and prayed for solace.

It has been reported that the funeral service will take place at noon today.
