The Mokokchung District GB Association convened a coordination meeting with the respected GBs of the Tuli Area in Tuli Town on 4 November 2023.

The leadership of the Mokokchung District GB Association, under the guidance of President Along Jamir, General Secretary Imlitemsu, Temjen Finance Secretary, and Ongpangkong Area GB Secretary Merang, gathered for this crucial event. In attendance were GBs hailing from sixteen villages and the Tuli town area, led by Langpangkong GB officials and Head GB Tuli.

Addressing the assembly, Mokokchung District GB Association President Along Jamir emphasized the historical significance of GBs, an institution that dates back to the British era. Furthermore, Jamir highlighted that GBs actively participate in the village-level customary court, operating in accordance with the provisions of the Village Council Act of 1978. They also possess the authority to act as law enforcement agents, as outlined in the Administration of Justice and Police Act of 1937.

GBs are instrumental in assisting the government during elections, censuses, and other important government initiatives. The recent letter from the Commissioner of Nagaland, dated October 28, 2023, underscored the significance of GBs and the need to integrate them more closely into the decision-making processes of the Village Council and Village Development Boards (VDBs).

President Jamir underlined the important role GBs play in times of adversity, symbolized by the ‘Red clothes’ they wear, representing their authority and responsibility to impartially carry out their duties. He called upon his fellow GBs to uphold the principles and values of their esteemed institution and earn the respect of the people through their actions.

Jamir also emphasized that the GB Association stands as a unifying force among Naga tribes, devoid of divisions. He urged fellow GBs to unite and work towards the betterment and welfare of Naga society.

During the interactive session, some participants suggested the need for clear guidelines regarding the powers and functions of the Village Council and urban area ward authority. In response, President Jamir clarified that GBs’ powers and functions are vested in them by the relevant authorities, stressing the importance of understanding their roles and responsibilities. He also encouraged GBs to maintain cordial relationships with the administration and the public, emphasizing the importance of timely communication with the government.
