The operation, conducted under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), focused on enforcing the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003, specifically Section 6(b) which prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of any educational institution. This initiative aims to create a safe and tobacco-free environment for students and patients.
The Mokokchung authorities discovered that these 14 shops were openly flouting the law by selling tobacco products dangerously close to schools and hospitals. In line with COTPA regulations, strict penalties were imposed on the offenders as a deterrent measure.
The joint initiators expressed the importance of such actions, stating, “Our primary concern is the health and well-being of our youth and the vulnerable in society. The sale of tobacco products near educational institutions and hospitals poses a grave risk to public health. We will continue to rigorously enforce COTPA to protect our citizens.”
The operation made a reminder to all shopkeepers and vendors to comply with tobacco control laws and regulations to ensure a healthier and safer environment for everyone in Mokokchung. The authorities have also urged citizens to report any violations of tobacco control laws for swift action.
